Der Wind im Raum
in cooperation with Nikhil Nagaraj und Jonas Wiese
live performance / concert 2021
In collaboration with the sound artists Nikhil Nagaraj (Bangalore) and Jonas Wiese (Leipzig), I developed the electronic live performance „Der Wind im Raum“. The piece was comissioned for the DIVE Festival for immersive arts at the Planetarium Bochum in 2021. In line with the festival’s orientation, the jointly designed performance focuses on the topics of digitality, virtuality and the environment. Using our own 3D audio software tools, analog synthesizers and field recordings, „Der Wind im Raum“ uses an artistic form that is located between improvisation and composition, between free play and fixed structure.
The spatial and physical experience of the wind is the conceptual inspiration for the immersive energy of the performance within the planetarium. Although its closed domed space stands in stark contrast to open space, it also mimics it. The resulting tension between openness and closedness, between outside and inside and between ether and contour constitutes the dynamic of this spatial audio live performance.
In this way, „Der Wind im Raum“ opens up a musical journey of perception through landscapes of constantly changing sounds and sound spaces. Between immersion and presence and in search of its own form, the performance develops as a dynamic narrative that appears almost physical due to its chains of tension, sketching a picture puzzle of joining and dissolving. Between intense crescendos and gentle whispers, the spatial image surrounding the listener arches, widens and narrows. In the suspended state between dream and awakening, between rhythmic and inclined intervals, new, unpredictable ways of experience can be tested and explored.
